Schools & Education in Whitley Bay

Whitley Bay sits within North Tyneside's three-tier school system, with first and middle schools feeding into Whitley Bay High School. From early years through to sixth form, here is how education works in the town.

How It Works

North Tyneside's Three-Tier System

Whitley Bay uses a three-tier structure — different from most of England. Children move through first, middle, and high school rather than the usual primary and secondary phases.

Ages 3–9

First School

Nursery – Year 4

First schools take children from the nursery year to Year 4. Whitley Bay's first schools include Coquet Park, Rockcliffe, Whitley Lodge, and Marine Park.

Ages 9–13

Middle School

Year 5 – Year 8

Children transfer to middle school in Year 5. Valley Gardens, Marden Bridge, and Monkseaton middle schools serve the town, with Valley Gardens rated Outstanding.

Ages 13–18

High School

Year 9 – Year 13

Whitley Bay High School takes students from Year 9 through to sixth form. It is rated Outstanding (2024) and is one of the largest and most popular high schools in the area.

A System in Transition

Whitley Bay's three-tier system currently operates as normal, but change may be on the way.

2025 consultation

North Tyneside Council launched a consultation in 2025 on the future of the coast's middle schools, part of a wider review of how education is organised in the area.

Monkseaton Middle School

Under the proposals, Monkseaton Middle School would close from September 2027. No changes have taken effect yet, and all three middle schools continue to admit pupils in the meantime.
