Best Schools in Whitley Bay
Whitley Bay High School (Outstanding), four first schools, and what parents need to know about North Tyneside's three-tier system.
Choosing the right school is one of the biggest decisions any family makes, and Whitley Bay is well served with good options at every stage. North Tyneside operates a distinctive three-tier system in this part of the borough -- first schools (ages 3-9), middle schools (ages 9-13) and high schools (ages 13-18) -- so the landscape looks a little different from the two-tier primary-and-secondary setup found in most of England.
Here is our guide to the main schools serving Whitley Bay families.
The three-tier system explained
Rather than moving from primary to secondary at age 11, children in the Whitley Bay area typically attend a first school until Year 4, transfer to a middle school for Years 5-8, and then move to a high school for Years 9-13. It is worth understanding this structure before you start looking at individual schools, because it shapes catchment areas and admissions timelines. Full details are available on the North Tyneside Council admissions page.
Best for: North Tyneside uses a three-tier system: first school (3-9), middle school (9-13), high school (13-18). Admissions timelines differ from most local authorities.
High schools
Whitley Bay High School
Whitley Bay High School on Deneholm is the standout secondary in the area. It was rated Outstanding by Ofsted in June 2024 across every category, including quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and sixth form provision. The school has a strong academic reputation, with consistently good GCSE and A-level results, and its sixth form is one of the largest and most popular in the region. It draws pupils from across Whitley Bay and neighbouring areas.
Best for: Rated Outstanding by Ofsted in 2024 across all categories. One of the highest-performing state schools in the North East.
Monkseaton High School
Monkseaton High School on Seatonville Road has been a fixture of the local education landscape for decades, but families should be aware of significant changes ahead. North Tyneside Council confirmed in late 2024 that Monkseaton High School will close on 31 August 2026 due to falling pupil numbers and an unsustainable financial position. Pupils are being supported in transitioning to alternative provision, with Whitley Bay High School the main receiving school. If you are considering schools for September 2026 onwards, Whitley Bay High School will effectively be the sole high school serving the area.
Best for: Monkseaton High School is closing on 31 August 2026. Whitley Bay High School will be the main high school for the area going forward.
First schools
First schools in the three-tier system take children from Nursery or Reception through to Year 4 (age 9). There are several good options across Whitley Bay.
Marine Park First School
Marine Park First School on Park Road (NE26 1LT) is one of the most popular first schools in Whitley Bay. It was rated Good by Ofsted in May 2022, with an Outstanding judgement for personal development. The school has a capacity of around 378 pupils and is well regarded by parents for its warm, inclusive atmosphere and strong pastoral care. Its central location makes it a convenient choice for families living in the heart of Whitley Bay.
Whitley Lodge First School
Whitley Lodge First School on Woodburn Drive (NE26 3HW) is another well-established first school rated Good by Ofsted in 2022. It describes itself as a warm and welcoming coastal school for children aged 3-9, and parent satisfaction scores on the Ofsted Parent View survey are high. The school has a strong community feel and is popular with families in the northern part of Whitley Bay.
Southridge First School
Southridge First School on Cranleigh Place (NE25 9UD) serves the Beaumont Park area and was rated Good by Ofsted in July 2022. With around 350 pupils, it is one of the larger first schools in the area. The school offers wraparound childcare through an on-site provider, which is a practical plus for working families.
Rockcliffe First School
Rockcliffe First School on Grafton Road (NE26 2NR) rounds out the local first school options. It is a smaller, community-focused school close to the seafront, offering a more intimate setting for younger children.
Best for: All four first schools listed here hold Good Ofsted ratings. Choose based on location, catchment and the feel that suits your family.
Middle schools
Middle schools bridge the gap between first and high school, covering Years 5-8 (ages 9-13). Valley Gardens Middle School and Marden Bridge Middle School are the main options in the Whitley Bay and Monkseaton area. It is worth noting that Monkseaton Middle School stopped admitting pupils into Year 5 from September 2026 as part of the broader reorganisation of school places in North Tyneside, so families should check the latest position with the council.
How admissions work
School admissions in North Tyneside are managed centrally through the council. You apply online via the North Tyneside admissions portal, and the usual deadlines apply -- typically mid-January for first school entry and late October for high school transfer. Because of the three-tier system, there are additional transfer points at Year 5 (middle school) and Year 9 (high school) that do not exist in two-tier areas.
