About St Edward's Catholic Church
St Edward's is a Roman Catholic parish church on Coquet Avenue in Whitley Bay, in the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle. Designed in 1921 by the Newcastle architects Pascal J. Stienlet and J. C. Maxwell and built by Henry Kelly & Co, it was opened by Bishop Thorman on 23 April 1928. The church is a striking modernised Romanesque design blending German and Italian Romanesque elements, and is a listed building. A painted Descent from the Cross was added to the organ case in 1945 as a memorial to parishioners and members of the Tyneside Irish Regiment who fell in the First World War, and the sanctuary was reordered in the late 1980s.
