North East Wado Ryu Karate Club

A long-established Wado Ryu karate club that has trained in the Whitley Bay and Cullercoats area for more than 40 years, welcoming all ages and abilities from brand-new starters to black belts, with junior classes.

About North East Wado Ryu Karate Club

North East Wado Ryu Karate Club has been part of the Whitley Bay and Cullercoats martial arts scene for more than 40 years, teaching Wado Ryu, a traditional Japanese style of karate that emphasises fluid movement, body-shifting and self-defence over brute force. The club welcomes members of all ages and abilities, from complete beginners to highly graded black belts, and runs separate junior classes so children train in an appropriate group. As well as karate it offers self-defence and ju-jitsu elements within its programme.

Sessions run across the week at community venues around the coast, with training at Cullercoats Community Centre on Belle Vue Street on Fridays and additional weekday classes at Whitley Bay High School and a local church hall. Because it teaches a traditional style built around a coloured-belt grading pathway, it suits families who want to progress together at their own pace. New starters are welcome to come along and watch or try a class before joining.
