Whitley Bay is one of the most popular seaside destinations in the North East, and on a sunny weekend the car parks fill up fast. Knowing where to park -- and when to arrive -- can make the difference between a relaxed day at the beach and a frustrating lap of the seafront.

Here is the practical guide to parking in Whitley Bay.

The Links Car Park

Address: The Links, Whitley Bay, NE26 1UE

The Links is the largest car park in Whitley Bay, with around 244 spaces spread along the seafront between the Northern Promenade and Watts Road. It is the most convenient option for the beach, the promenade, and Spanish City.

Parking charges apply 9am to 8pm, seven days a week. Outside those hours, parking is free. Payment is by pay-and-display machine or the RingGo app. Charges are set by North Tyneside Council and are reviewed annually -- check the machines on arrival for current rates.

Best for: This is the first car park to fill on sunny weekends. If you are heading to the beach on a warm Saturday, aim to arrive before 10am.

Playhouse Car Park

Address: Marine Avenue, Whitley Bay, NE26 1EQ

Tucked behind the Playhouse Theatre on Marine Avenue, this council-run car park has around 100 bays and is a short walk from both the seafront and the town centre shops. It is often overlooked by visitors heading straight for The Links, which makes it a good backup option.

Charges are approximately £1.50 per hour, payable via RingGo or the on-site machines. Free parking applies outside the charged hours. It is well-lit and generally quieter than the seafront options, making it a sensible choice for evening visits to the theatre or nearby restaurants.

Best for: A good alternative when The Links is full, and handy for the town centre shops on Whitley Road.

Old Hartley Car Park

Address: Old Hartley, Whitley Bay, NE26 4RB

If you are visiting St Mary's Lighthouse, Old Hartley car park is the one you need. It has around 60 spaces and charges approximately £1 per day -- making it excellent value for a full day out at the lighthouse and nature reserve.

The car park is a short walk from the tidal causeway. On busy days in summer it fills by late morning, so arrive early if you are planning a low-tide visit. There are no other car parks nearby, so if Old Hartley is full, you may need to park further south along the coast road and walk.

Best for: The only car park for St Mary's Lighthouse. Arrive early on sunny days and bank holidays.

Park View -- On-Street Parking

The residential streets around Park View and the town centre offer on-street parking that is free in most areas, though some spaces have time restrictions during shopping hours. This is a practical option if you are visiting the independent shops, cafes, and restaurants on Whitley Road and Park Avenue rather than the seafront.

Be mindful of resident-only zones -- these are clearly signed. The streets closest to the seafront tend to have restrictions during summer, so read the signs carefully.

The Metro Alternative

If you would rather avoid the car park hunt altogether, Whitley Bay Metro station is a short walk from the seafront and town centre. Trains run regularly from Newcastle, Jesmond, and the wider Tyne and Wear network. The journey from Newcastle city centre takes around 25 minutes.

From the station, it is roughly a five-minute walk down to the seafront and Spanish City. For St Mary's Lighthouse, you can walk north along the coastal path from Whitley Bay -- it takes about 30 minutes and the views are excellent.

Best for: The Metro is the stress-free option on busy summer weekends. No parking charges, no queues, and a scenic walk to the beach.

Summer Tips

Whitley Bay is busiest on sunny weekends from May to September, and the Spanish City area fills first. Here are a few tips:

  • Arrive before 10am on warm weekends to guarantee a seafront space at The Links.
  • Try Playhouse Car Park first if The Links looks full -- it is often quieter.
  • Use the Metro on bank holidays and peak summer Saturdays. Parking on these days can be genuinely difficult.
  • Old Hartley fills early during school holidays. If you are visiting the lighthouse, an early start is essential.
  • Check the council website for any temporary parking changes during events or seafront closures.
