Date Night in Whitley Bay: Restaurants, Bars and Things to Do
Where to eat, drink and wander for a romantic evening in Whitley Bay, from Park View restaurants and the Spanish City dome to cocktails, craft ale and a walk along the seafront.
Whitley Bay has quietly become one of the best nights out on the North East coast. The seafront regeneration around the restored Spanish City dome gave the town a landmark to be proud of again, and just behind it the Park View strip has filled up with independent bars, taquerias and wine shops that would not look out of place in Ouseburn. Add a long, Blue Flag beach for a walk at sunset and an island lighthouse to aim for, and you have all the makings of a lovely evening without ever leaving NE26. This guide gathers the best of it for a relaxed date night, whether you are marking an occasion or just fancy a change from a night on the sofa.
Dinner: where to eat
For the setting alone, nothing else in town comes close to 1910 Steak & Seafood, the fine-dining restaurant inside the Spanish City dome. You dine beneath the restored cupola with panoramic views out over the North Sea, working through steak and seafood dishes made with premium ingredients. Dinner is served on Friday and Saturday evenings, so it takes a little planning, but for an anniversary or a big occasion it is the obvious first choice. Book ahead and ask about the tables with the best view.
Best for: Best for a special-occasion dinner under the Spanish City dome.
If you would rather be in the thick of the town's independent scene, head for Park View. Little Lobo is a vibrant Mexican taqueria and bar serving tacos, burritos and sharing plates alongside a proper tequila and mezcal list, and its colourful, buzzy atmosphere makes it a natural for a date that wants a bit of energy. A few doors along, Fox and Finch is an independent tapas bar and brunch spot open daily from morning through to late evening, ideal if you like grazing across lots of small plates rather than committing to one big dish.
Over on Whitley Road, Elder & Wolf serves stone-baked pizzas, kebabs and tacos with cocktails on the side, a relaxed, keenly priced option that works whether you are dressing up or keeping it casual. Between the three you can pitch the evening at whatever level suits.
Best for: Best for a lively independent dinner among Park View's bars and taquerias.
Drinks: cocktails, wine and craft ale
Whitley Bay's evening drinking scene is friendly and independent rather than flashy, which suits a date night just fine. District Bottle Shop on Park View is an independent wine bar and bottle shop that opened in 2024, the kind of place where you can settle in with a glass chosen from the shelves or take a bottle home. It works equally well as a quiet pre-dinner glass or the start of a longer night, sitting right among the Park View cluster of bars and restaurants.
If real ale is more your thing, the Dog & Rabbit is a family-run micropub and microbrewery in a converted former clothing shop, with six handpumps at a corner bar and beers brewed on the premises. There are no jukeboxes or televisions, just good beer and proper conversation, which makes it a genuinely lovely spot to talk. And if you fancy a cocktail with your food, Little Lobo and Elder & Wolf both mix drinks alongside their menus, so you can make an evening of the food and the drinks in one place.
Best for: Best for an independent glass of wine, a craft cocktail or a pint of proper ale.
Things to do together
The best free thing to do on a date in Whitley Bay is simply to walk the seafront. The paved promenade runs the length of the front past the floodlit Spanish City dome, and a stroll as the light drops over the water is about as romantic as this coast gets. Since 2026 the promenade connects into North Tyneside's five-mile seafront route, so you can keep going as far as the energy lasts.
If the tide is right, aim for St Mary's Lighthouse at the northern end of the bay. The lighthouse stands on a small tidal island reached by a concrete causeway that the sea covers twice a day, so check the tide times before you set out. Walking out to the island as the sun goes down, then back before the causeway floods, is a small adventure that turns an ordinary evening into something memorable. For a wet-weather plan, the independent Jam Jar Cinema on Park Avenue shows new releases and classics in an intimate setting, an easy fallback if the North Sea weather has other ideas.
Best for: Best for a sunset walk to the lighthouse, with the cinema as a rainy-night plan B.
Planning a full evening
For a compact date night you can string the lot together and barely use the car. Start with a walk along the front and out towards the Spanish City as the light fades, move on to dinner at 1910 for an occasion or Little Lobo and Fox and Finch for something livelier, then finish with a glass at District Bottle Shop or a pint at the Dog & Rabbit. It is a small town, everything is within a short walk, and that closeness is rather the point.
