Best Italian Restaurants in Whitley Bay

Pranzo, La Casetta, Davanti Whitley Lodge, and Project — the best Italian restaurants in Whitley Bay.

Whitleybay.live·

Whitley Bay has quietly built one of the strongest Italian dining scenes on the North East coast. From a tiny trattoria ranked number one on Tripadvisor to a family-friendly seafront restaurant and a Neapolitan pizzeria with a cult following, there is real depth and variety here. Four restaurants stand out.

Pranzo Trattoria and Deli

Pranzo at 16 Station Road is small, family-run, and uncompromising. The food is authentic Italian with no shortcuts — proper carbonara made without cream, fresh pasta, slow-cooked ragu, and a menu that changes to reflect what is good and in season. It is ranked number one in Whitley Bay on Tripadvisor, which for a town with over 140 restaurants is no small achievement. The deli counter sells Italian provisions, so you can take home olive oil, cured meats, and pasta to recreate the experience at home.

Tables are limited, so booking ahead is strongly advised, especially at weekends. This is the kind of restaurant that cities ten times the size of Whitley Bay would be proud to have.

Best for: Ranked number one in Whitley Bay, authentic Italian, no-compromise cooking, deli counter.

La Casetta

La Casetta at 33 Esplanade brings Italian and Mediterranean cuisine to the seafront. The atmosphere is warm and family-friendly, with generous portions and a menu that covers pizza, pasta, meat, and fish dishes. A popular happy hour deal runs Tuesday to Saturday from 5pm to 6:30pm, offering pizza or pasta at a reduced price — genuine value for a seafront restaurant.

The setting on the Esplanade means you get sea views from many tables, which adds something to the experience on a clear evening. La Casetta has quickly become a local favourite since opening, and weekend tables fill up fast.

Best for: Seafront setting, family-friendly, happy hour pizza and pasta deal.

Davanti Whitley Lodge

Davanti Whitley Lodge at 2 Claremont Crescent is a modern Italian restaurant in the Whitley Lodge area, slightly set back from the seafront. The menu is broad — pizza, pasta, meat and fish mains, and Italian desserts — all done reliably well. It is a solid neighbourhood Italian of the kind that every town needs: somewhere you can eat well on a Tuesday evening without it needing to be an event.

Part of the Davanti group, which also operates Davanti Classico at Tynemouth Station, the Whitley Lodge branch has its own character and a loyal local following.

Best for: Reliable neighbourhood Italian, broad menu, part of the Davanti group.

Project Pizza and Wine

Project at 133 Park View is a Neapolitan pizzeria with a carefully curated wine list and a devoted following. The dough is proved for 48 hours and baked in a wood-fired oven at 450 degrees, producing pizzas with genuine Neapolitan character — charred, blistered, and full of flavour. The intimate setting and handmade approach mean capacity is limited, so booking is wise.

While Project is primarily a pizzeria rather than a full Italian restaurant, the quality of the pizza and the seriousness of the wine list earn it a place on any list of Italian dining in Whitley Bay.

Best for: 48-hour proved dough, wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, curated wine list.
