Whitley Bay Carnival Returns with a 'Folk' Theme on 11 July

The free seafront carnival is back on Saturday 11 July 2026 with a Folk theme, a parade of giant puppets from the Metro station to the seafront, and a full day of entertainment.

One of the biggest days in the Whitley Bay calendar is almost here. Whitley Bay Carnival returns on Saturday 11 July 2026 with a "Folk" theme, and as a free, not-for-profit event it remains a proper community day out, as listed by Visit North Tyneside.

The Parade

The parade is the heart of the day. It sets off from Whitley Bay Metro station at 11am, then winds along Station Road, Whitley Road, Park View and Marine Avenue before arriving down at the seafront around 12.30pm.

This year's Folk theme has inspired an imaginative procession of giant characters drawn from folklore -- everything from ancient myths to modern tales -- carried and accompanied by costumed performers, families, artists and musicians from schools and community groups across the area. Expect live music along the route from local bands to keep the crowds moving.

After the Parade

Once the procession reaches the coast, the celebration carries on with entertainment and activities along the seafront and around Spanish City Plaza. With last year's carnival reportedly drawing around 20,000 people, it is worth getting down early to find a good spot.

Best for: Free to attend, family-friendly and right on our doorstep -- the parade leaves the Metro station at 11am on Saturday 11 July. Bring a folding chair if you want a comfortable view along the route.

A Community Effort

The carnival is run on a not-for-profit basis and depends on volunteers, schools and community groups to bring the giant puppets and costumes to life each year. It is one of the clearest expressions of what makes the town tick -- a free, home-grown spectacle that brings the whole community out onto the streets. If you are new to Whitley Bay, this is the one to put in the diary.
