Whitley Bay Beach Keeps Its Blue Flag and Seaside Award for 2026

Whitley Bay's beach has once again been recognised among the best in the country, retaining both its Blue Flag and a Seaside Award for 2026. For a town whose identity is bound up with its coastline, it is a reassuring mark of quality for residents and visitors alike.

The awards, presented by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, judge beaches against strict standards covering water quality, cleanliness, safety, environmental management and visitor facilities. Whitley Bay was one of three North Tyneside beaches to secure both accolades this year, alongside Tynemouth Longsands and King Edward's Bay. The borough's beaches have now maintained these standards for more than three decades.

The Blue Flag is an international standard held by relatively few beaches, and 2026 saw just 23 across England awarded it, with 65 earning a Seaside Award and only 41 achieving both. That places Whitley Bay in a small group of English beaches meeting the top benchmark on every count.

Councillor Hannah Johnson, North Tyneside Council's Cabinet Member for the Environment, welcomed the news. "The Blue Flag is an international symbol of excellence," she said, adding that displaying it "sends a clear message to visitors" about the quality of the coast.

For residents, the awards matter beyond bragging rights. They reflect consistently clean bathing water, a well-managed beach and the kind of reliable standards that make daily dog walks, family days out and morning sea swims something to look forward to. They also underpin the town's visitor economy, giving cafes, shops and seafront businesses a national badge of quality to trade on through the summer.

The recognition lands alongside a run of seafront investment, from the new lower-promenade saunas to the completed sustainable route linking Whitley Bay with Tynemouth. Full details of the 2026 awards are available from North Tyneside Council.
