Swimming in Whitley Bay

Waves leisure centre with its wave machine and slides, sea swimming at the beach, and the Panama Swimming Club — every way to swim in Whitley Bay.

Whitleybay.live·

Whitley Bay has more swimming options than you might expect for a small coastal town. There is a well-equipped leisure pool with slides and a wave machine, miles of sandy beach for open-water swimming, and a long-standing sea swimming club that has been braving the North Sea since 1930. Whether you are looking for a family day out, lane swimming for fitness, or the thrill of cold-water dipping, there is something here for you.

Waves Leisure Centre

Waves is Whitley Bay's main indoor swimming facility, located on The Links (NE26 1TQ), just a short walk from the seafront. It is run by North Tyneside Council and is the go-to venue for families, lane swimmers, and anyone who prefers their water heated.

What to expect

The centrepiece is the leisure pool with its wave machine, which runs at scheduled times throughout the day and is hugely popular with children. There are three high-speed slides with racing traffic lights so you can compete against friends and family to see who reaches the bottom first. For younger visitors, the Rock Hopper play area features a pirate ship with mini slides, water-squirting geysers, a tipping treasure chest, and water-squirting animals -- it is designed for toddlers and younger children and is a real hit with the under-fives.

Best for: Waves features a wave machine, three racing slides, and a pirate-ship play area for younger children. Located on The Links, NE26 1TQ.

Beyond the pool

Waves is more than just a swimming pool. The centre houses the Contours gym with modern equipment and a full programme of fitness classes. There is also a soft play area that can be hired for children's parties, and a coffee bar for parents who need a sit-down while the kids burn off energy. Lane swimming sessions and aqua aerobics classes run throughout the week -- check the North Tyneside leisure timetable for current session times.

Best for: Waves also has a gym, soft play area, and coffee bar. Contact them on 0191 643 2600 for session times and party bookings.

Sea swimming at Whitley Bay Beach

For a completely different swimming experience, Whitley Bay's long sandy beach offers open-water swimming with a dramatic coastal backdrop. The beach stretches from the town centre northwards towards St Mary's Lighthouse, and the water quality is generally good. The beach is RNLI lifeguarded during summer months, which provides an extra layer of safety for those venturing into the sea.

What you need to know

Sea temperatures along the North East coast range from around 7-8 degrees in winter to the low-to-mid teens in July and August. A wetsuit is strongly recommended outside of high summer, and even in August the water is bracing by most standards. Swim shoes are useful for navigating the rocky sections, and a brightly coloured tow float is a sensible safety measure that also makes you visible to other water users. Never swim alone in the sea, and always check tide times and conditions before heading in.

Best for: Whitley Bay Beach is RNLI lifeguarded in summer. Sea temperatures peak around 14-15 degrees in late July and August. A wetsuit and tow float are recommended.

Panama Swimming Club

If you want company in the water, the Panama Swimming Club is a Whitley Bay institution. Founded in 1930, the club has been organising sea swims from the Northern Promenade for nearly a century. Members meet for three organised swims per week throughout the year, regardless of the weather, and the club has a loyal following of all-season swimmers. Their pavilion on the promenade is a familiar local landmark.

The club is a brilliant way to ease into open-water swimming if you are new to it. Swimming with experienced regulars is far safer and more enjoyable than going it alone, and the social side -- the post-swim chat, the camaraderie of a freezing February dip -- is a big part of the appeal.

Best for: Panama Swimming Club has been swimming in the North Sea since 1930. Three organised swims per week, all year round.

Tynemouth Outdoor Pool

Just along the coast in Tynemouth, there is an ongoing campaign to restore the Tynemouth Outdoor Pool, a historic lido that once drew crowds from across the region. The restoration project has attracted significant community support and fundraising efforts. If the project succeeds, it would add another fantastic swimming option within easy reach of Whitley Bay. Keep an eye on their website for the latest developments.

Tips for families

For a good family day out, combine a morning at Waves with an afternoon on the beach. The leisure centre is right next to the seafront, so you can move between the two without getting back in the car. Pack a picnic, grab a coffee from one of the nearby cafes on the promenade, and make a full day of it. During school holidays, Waves runs additional family sessions and the wave machine tends to be on more frequently.
