Record Fairs & Vinyl in Whitley Bay

For a coastal town, Whitley Bay punches above its weight for vinyl, with its own independent record shop and an occasional fair in one of the area's most characterful little venues. Here is where to dig, on the doorstep and a short ride away. Dates for the pop-up fair are irregular, so follow the venue for the next one.

Mama Roux Records

The heart of vinyl in town is Mama Roux Records on Whitley Road, an independent shop selling new and second-hand LPs and CDs across an eclectic range of genres, with a particular strength in rock and post-punk, plus DVDs, Blu-rays and music merchandise. Friendly, keenly priced and arranged for a proper browse, it is the reason many locals never need to leave town for their fix.

The Monkseaton pop-up record fair

Just inland, the Left Luggage Room inside Monkseaton's restored Metro station building (NE26 3NR) is a much-loved micropub that occasionally hosts vinyl fairs run by the Pop-Up Record Shop. Flicking through crates of records with a pint in a converted station left-luggage office is about as good as record-hunting gets. The fairs are irregular, so keep an eye on the venue for the next date.

Further afield

When you want a bigger dig, the coast is well connected by Metro to Newcastle, home to the region's strongest cluster of shops, including Reflex, Beatdown Records, RPM Music and Vinyl Guru, plus 586 Records across the river in Gateshead. There are recurring collectors' fairs on Newcastle's Quayside and in the Durham area too.
