Panama Swimming Club Seeks Facelift for Its 1930s Promenade Clubhouse

The Panama Swimming Club, the last of Whitley Bay's old sea-swimming clubs still standing, has applied to carry out repairs to its distinctive clubhouse on the Northern Promenade. The club has occupied the seafront building since 1930, and the years of salt air and sea spray have taken their toll on its ageing timber-framed windows.

The application seeks permission to replace the clubhouse's largely single-glazed and rotten windows and shutters, which have left the building damp and poorly ventilated. Plans describe removing the exterior metal sashes and shutters and fitting a new sill, with the aim of improving weather protection and cutting down the water getting in.

Clearer windows, safer beach

There is a practical safety dimension too. The application notes that replacing the windows would improve visibility from inside the clubhouse, meaning swimmers and beachgoers on the sands below can be seen more clearly. On an exposed stretch of coast, better sightlines from a permanently staffed seafront building are a genuine asset for keeping an eye on the water.

The club has been a fixture of the promenade for the best part of a century, named after a ship wrecked nearby in the 1930s, and remains a members' club for hardy sea swimmers who take to the North Sea year-round.

This is a planning application rather than completed work. At the time of writing the proposals had been submitted to North Tyneside Council for determination, so the repairs still need to clear the usual approval process before any work begins.

Modest as it sounds, a window replacement matters here. It helps preserve one of the seafront's more characterful survivors and keeps a working sea-swimming club watching over a busy beach, a small piece of the coast's living heritage rather than a museum piece.
