Halloween in Whitley Bay

The stretch of coast around Whitley Bay turns wonderfully atmospheric at Halloween, and just inland sits one of the region's best spooky-season days out. Here is what is on. Dates change every year, so always check each venue for this year's programme and to book.

Seaton Delaval Hall

A short drive from Whitley Bay, the National Trust's Seaton Delaval Hall puts on a substantial annual Halloween programme. In recent years that has included a family "Tales from the Shadows" interactive trail through the grounds by day, and a much scarier, adults-oriented "Halloween at the Hall: After Dark" experience in the basement, themed around Bram Stoker's Dracula. The After Dark dates sell out, so book early and check the age guidance.

The Hall's spooky reputation is well earned. This grand and scandal-haunted mansion has several ghost legends of its own, including "Isobella Darling" said to linger in the old kitchen, a former keeper, and a White Lady said to appear at an upstairs window, waiting for a lover lost to war.

St Mary's Lighthouse

For an eerie autumn photo, few spots beat St Mary's Lighthouse, the Victorian island lighthouse reached across a tidal causeway at the north end of the bay. Time your walk with the tide, wrap up, and enjoy one of the most dramatic settings on the coast as the light fades.
