EV Charging Points in Whitley Bay

Morrisons rapid charger, Bournemouth Gardens car park, and the North Tyneside Zest rollout -- where to charge an electric car in and around Whitley Bay.

Whitleybay.live·

Whitley Bay's EV charging infrastructure is growing, with a rapid charger at Morrisons, council car park chargers, and new Zest-operated sites arriving as part of the North East Combined Authority's rollout. Here is the practical guide.

Rapid Charging

MFG EV Power at Morrisons Whitley Bay, Hillheads Road, NE25 8HN -- 1 device, 2 connectors, offering rapid DC charging at up to 50 kW. Charge while you do the weekly shop. Contactless payment or MFG EV Power app.

North East Garages Ltd at Claremont Crescent, NE26 3HL -- 1 device on the Project EV network. A useful alternative if Morrisons is occupied.

Council Car Park Chargers

Bournemouth Gardens car park has public EV chargers with Type 2 Mennekes connectors at 7 kW. Best suited to longer stays -- a few hours at the seafront while the car tops up. Part of the North Tyneside Council network.

Best for:

North Tyneside Council and the North East Combined Authority are rolling out 40 new fast-charging EV spaces across 18 sites in partnership with Zest. Town centre car parks, coastal sites, and leisure centres are all targeted. More Whitley Bay chargers are expected throughout 2026.

Nearby Chargers

Mer network at Northumbria NHS Innovation Centre, Avenue Road, Seaton Delaval, NE25 0QJ -- 3 devices. A short drive from Whitley Bay proper but worth knowing about if other chargers are occupied.

Zest at Beaconsfield Car Park, Grand Parade, Tynemouth, NE30 4JF -- 2 devices, up to 50 kW DC. Open 24 hours, right on the seafront. Five minutes' drive from Whitley Bay.

Morrisons at Hillheads Road also sits close to the Whitley Bay Ice Rink on NE25 8HP, so you can combine a skating session with a charge.

Home Charging

If you have a driveway, a home wallbox is the cheapest way to charge -- typically 7-10p/kWh on an overnight tariff. Installation costs around £800-£1,200 before any grant.

The OZEV grant (up to £500, covering 75% of installation cost) is available for renters, flat owners, and landlords -- but ended for owner-occupiers with driveways in 2022.

The Residential Picture

Whitley Bay has a wide mix of housing, from Victorian terraces on the streets behind the seafront to 1930s semis and modern estates further inland. Many properties have driveways, making home charger installation feasible, but the terraced streets closer to Park View and the promenade are more challenging.

North Tyneside Council's Zero Emission Vehicles Strategy recognises this gap and is focused on providing publicly available charging hubs at off-street locations. The Zest partnership is delivering exactly that, with new sites coming online throughout 2026.
